I Stopped Trying to Get More LinkedIn Impressions And, Well...
Plus, a special announcement
I am sharing 3 things with you today:
1: I stopped trying to get more impressions
2: Collaborating with peers
3: Double niche
Let’s get into it.
I Stopped Trying to Get More Impressions
What do you really want out of LinkedIn? Your answer to that question should determine how you approach the platform.
Initially, I wanted to understand LinkedIn and see if I could replicate my success on Medium there. That turned out very well. Better than expected.
Now, after 5k followers, I am thinking about how to make money from LinkedIn. Now, I am starting from scratch. There is no pipeline, product, or anything like that.
My impression count has been down big in the last few weeks because I am currently experimenting around this. My niche is remote work and I have no product or service that I am selling along those lines.
I have things to sell along the lines of marketing. And that is what I am focusing on now. I don’t know how long it will take for me to figure things out, but this is worth the experiment.
If you are selling something directly connected to your expertise, your journey doesn’t necessarily have to look like mine. Yours is straightforward.
But for me, my approach to LinkedIn content has changed…
Instead of focusing on remote work posts (to engage on), I now engage on the post of anyone who is either a peer or potential client.
So far, the peer strategy is working. I have a couple of calls lined up already. And it is very simple…
I comment on their post. They comment back. We find a common ground on something. I send connection request. They accept. I continue the conversation on DM. And sometimes, that leads to a call.
Instead of making more people follow me, I am making more people know me. My target is opportunities, not impressions. I don’t know what niche this would lead me into. I am yet to figure that out.
But my strategy is who over what. Meaning that I am putting people before the subject or niche. Eventually, I will figure out a niche. But for now, I keep connecting with people and translating that to calls.
Collaborating With Peers
The peer conversations I have been in so far have been awesome. My emphasis over the last few days has been this – opportunities come from peers.
Too many people are chasing big names. Don’t.
It is people like you that can understand what you need and can spot things that would be a good fit for you.
Even if you are B2B and you are chasing ICP, don’t neglect connecting with peers. In fact, the best kind of sales job is the sales job where your ICP sees you as a peer. The sales conversation is easy.
One major mistake I see a lot of people make with peer collaborations is that they think too much of “What’s in it for me?”
I always like to put it this way – give people the opportunity to cheat you and they will reveal themselves to you very quickly.
Always lead with generosity and see how they react. From how they react, you will know if it is a connection to nurture or it’s one to forget in the freezer.
Start collaborating with strangers. It will change your life. Promote things for other people. Help people build their stuff, as long as it is fair to you and you are wanted.
Double Niche
I am still trying to see whether remote work will work along with the new niche I am trying to find.
I know how to get 100k impressions right now on LinkedIn. I would just make a recent and useful list of remote companies or jobs.
Been there, done that. Tired of it. And more importantly, it doesn’t make me money neither does it bring me clients.
So, I would be trying double niche or a new niche entirely. And I’ll be sure to share the findings with you.
But for now, double niche doesn’t work.
If you have a niche that is connected to your business, throttle down on it. If you don’t, you would have to find it.
I rest my case.
