People Follow You on LinkedIn for Only Two Reasons...
Plus, how to start productive conversations with ICP
I am sharing 3 things with you today:
1: Two reasons people follow you
2: How to beat AI-generated content
3: How to start productive conversations with ICP
Let’s get into it.
Two Reasons People Follow You
There are only 2 reasons people follow you on LinkedIn. And if you are honest with yourself, you will realize that these are the only 2 reasons you would ever follow anyone on LinkedIn.
The first – who you are.
This is why people in high positions in big companies naturally have more followers on LinkedIn. And if you find someone who is a solo founder, check out their experience section. If they have worked at a certain big company and it is verified, naturally, their words carry more weight when they talk about their expertise.
This is why people with big company experience will naturally grow more following than people who don’t have such.
Another thing here is the celebrity factor. A celebrity (who takes LinkedIn seriously) will naturally have a significant following on LinkedIn. Why? People know who they are. And people want to associate with who they are.
The second reason people follow you – what they can get.
I’d be honest, I use this as a filter to accept connection request. I think – what can I get from this person? Does this person look like someone who has some value that can benefit me?
It doesn’t have to be something big. It could be small. But there has to be something. And it must not be something I have to think deeply about.
It must be something that is instantly clear.
If you are not a celebrity and you don’t have a big-name experience, the obvious way to grow on LinkedIn is to bank on option 2.
Even if you have a big-name experience, it is still smart to count on option 2 – what people can get.
A lot of people have followed me in the last few months because they believe they can get remote work opportunities (which, sadly, I don’t offer). But my insights and tips have helped a lot of people in the space.
I’m telling you this so that you can know how to position yourself – have something people want. Make people feel like they can get something tangible from you (i.e. from your posts)
How to Beat AI-Generated Content
LinkedIn is flooded with ghostwriter content and AI-generated content. And most people hate it.
But they will still pretend to like it as long as it is coming from their favorite celebrity or public figure. I have recommended against the blatant use of AI in content. And to be candid, I am not okay with ghostwriter content.
But one thing that AI can’t do is tell original (real-life) stories.
And this is where I am leaning right now. Over the next few weeks, I would be focused on telling stories. We’ll see how that goes and I would update you on it.
But storytelling is the only sure way to beat AI content fundamentally.
How to Start Productive Conversations With ICP
If your LinkedIn reach is down, find someone in your niche with a post (that has just started trending) and then repost it.
Don’t repost with your thoughts. It is often bad for impressions. Just do a plain repost.
Also, remember that productive conversations start in the comment section. If they respond back to you favorably, send a connection request. you go from there to the DMs. From the DMs, carve out a reason to get on a call.
Business opportunities are a byproduct of talking to people. The more people you talk to, the higher your chances of getting good business.
This is how to connect with an ICP. And this is a much better way to create opportunities as an SDR on LinkedIn.
Your impression count may be down, but if you continue talking to people, you will keep making bank.
